Laptops are convenient because the screen and keyboard are combined, but that design creates a
compromise. If the screen is at a comfortable height, the keyboard is usually too high. If the keyboard is
at the right height, the screen is usually too low.
For short, occasional tasks, vary your position and avoid hunching over the laptop. For prolonged work,
use a laptop stand or other stable support to raise the screen, together with a separate keyboard and
mouse. A separate monitor can also provide a more sustainable setup. Do not use a laptop balanced on
an unstable pile of objects.
When working away from your normal workstation, make the best reasonable adjustments before
beginning a long task. Choose a table and chair rather than a sofa, place the device centrally and reduce
the amount of uninterrupted screen work. If a temporary setup cannot be made suitable, limit the time
spent using it and move to a better location when possible.
Tablets and smartphones are useful for quick checks, messages and calls, but prolonged use can
encourage a bent neck and repetitive thumb movements. Bring the device closer to eye level, support
your arms and alternate hands. For lengthy emails, document editing or detailed platform work, move to
a laptop or desktop setup.
Avoid walking while reading or typing on a device. Stop in a safe place before using it and stay aware of
your surroundings when joining calls away from a desk.
