A DSE self-assessment is a practical check of how your workstation works for you. Complete it while
sitting at the workstation you normally use. If you work regularly in more than one location, consider
each location rather than assuming that an assessment of one desk covers them all.
Begin with your normal working position. Ask whether the chair supports you, whether your feet are
stable, whether the screen is easy to read and whether the keyboard and mouse can be used without
stretching. Check for glare, restricted legroom, trailing cables, excessive noise or anything else that
affects the environment.
Be honest about discomfort. The purpose of the assessment is to identify improvements, not to judge
how tidy your desk is or whether you have arranged everything correctly. A small concern recorded early
is much easier to address than a problem that has developed over several months.
When the assessment identifies an issue, make any simple and safe adjustment you can. For example,
reposition the monitor, clear space under the desk, alter the chair or move frequently used items closer.
Do not improvise with unstable piles of books, boxes or other objects that could slip or create a new
hazard.
Some issues will need support. You may require different equipment, help adjusting a chair, advice about
a specialist setup or an individual assessment. Follow the current Titus Learning process for submitting
your DSE assessment and raise anything that cannot be resolved with your line manager or the person
responsible for health and safety.
