1. Preventing Eye Strain Techniques

10. Looking after your eyes

DSE work does not cause permanent damage to the eyes, but long and visually demanding tasks can
cause temporary discomfort. Symptoms can include tired or dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and
difficulty focusing.
Blinking helps keep the eyes moist, but people often blink less frequently when concentrating on a
screen. Make a habit of looking away regularly and focusing on something farther away. Adjust text size,
contrast and lighting so that you are not straining to read.
Glare can come from windows, overhead lights, glossy surfaces or the display itself. Reposition the
screen or adjust blinds and lighting rather than accepting a reflection all day. Clean the screen and, if
applicable, your glasses. Smudges and dust reduce clarity and can encourage you to lean forwards.
DSE users are entitled to an eye and eyesight test arranged and paid for by the employer if they request
one. If the test shows that special glasses are needed specifically for the viewing distance used for DSE
work, the employer must meet the cost of a basic suitable pair. This does not normally include ordinary
glasses that are also used for general purposes.
Follow the current Titus Learning process if you wish to request a DSE eye test or need information
about reimbursement. An eye test is not a substitute for correcting a poor workstation, and a good
workstation is not a substitute for seeking professional advice about changes in vision.
